Film Overview

You’ve heard of Fire Island Pines, the famously homonormative community just off the coast of Long Island. Now kick back as Sense8 star Brian J. Smith revisits the LGBTQ+ mecca’s storied history while playfully training his camera on the many people who work, live, and play there.Fifty miles outside of New York City lies Fire Island Pines, known for decades as a gay man’s paradise. Filled with pristine beaches, all-night dance parties, free love orgies, connection, and community, it's no wonder Fire Island has earned its reputation as a “homo-normative” haven. Over the years, physical changes, due to climate change, have taken a toll on the island and its beaches. Interpersonal obstacles persist as well, including a disconnect between the older generation of AIDS epidemic survivors and a younger generation, many of whom long for a more inclusive LGBTQ+ scene on the island. Capturing the history and legacy of this one-of-a-kind place, A HOUSE IS NOT A DISCO is a raw and reflective documentary that both paints Fire Island as a beautiful refuge and explores a new wave of challenges. —G.S.GUEST(S) IN ATTENDANCE
