This comedy-drama deals with the real Madonna – the Holy Virgin who remains a living presence to everyone from soldiers to peasants. This includes infamous gangster “Toad” Estivaris, who's had a good year and wants to express his thanks by giving a small church the best possible plaster Madonna. The toad hires Domingo, a profane, penniless artisan renowned for his Madonnas, to fashion a life-sized icon and transport it across rugged countryside to the parish in 12 days – or else. The journey is fraught with peril, temptation, romance, and heartbreak, but Domingo trusts that his blessed statue will protect him and his small, motley entourage against anything that happens.
