About This Film
Film Overview
Driving ambition, sex, hard work and some illicit pharmaceuticals help Kaisa (Lena Heady) maintain her fast-track career and lifestyle in London as a young attorney. Then her dysfunctional, pan-European family past catches up with her, in the form of an alcoholic father named Tomas. He split from Kaisa's British mother (Charlotte Rampling) a long time ago. Now it's the ex-wife's dying request that Tomas be brought to Aberdeen and try to dry out in a new, experimental rehab program, for which he's already, somewhat dubiously, volunteered. The daughter has to find Tomas, then go along as a chaperone and authority figure, to keep the old man in line long enough to deposit him successfully at the clinic. Stellan Skarsg?rd portrays the father, an ornery lush whom Kaisa hasn't seen in ten years. Between Kaisa's pill-popping and Tomas's whiskey, selective memory and vile mood swings, this estranged father-daughter duo will be taking plenty of high roads and low roads before they wind up in Scotland afore ye, in a drama in which two addicted generations recognize their shared flaws that no 12-step program can wrap up neatly.
