Absolute Wilson

Avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson is among the most controversial artists of contemporary times. His profound body of work has consistently pushed the theatrical envelope with surrealist design and unorthodox choreography. His stage productions are considered visual achievements and his methodologies are considered unconventional. While Wilson's productions, put on screen, speak largely for themselves, in Absolute Wilson the artist speaks with candor of his youth in Waco, and the creative processes that brought him fame. Of particular significance is Wilson's disclosure of a childhood speech impediment and learning disability which led to his ability to communicate through images. Commentary is provided by a variety of Wilson's fellow artists and supporters, including Susan Sotang and David Bryne. Five years in the making stylishly executed, the film's careful editing ties the film's subject and his work together seamlessly, doing ample justice to both the artist and the art. – J.B.H.
