About This Film
Film Overview
In an ableist society, what does it mean to be disabled and queer…and sensual? That’s the crux of Daniel Gonçalves’ masterfully framed and comprehensive survey on disability justice and how people “outside of the norm” engage in and talk about sexual pleasure. Winner of NewFest’s Best Documentary Award.Cast all expectations and inhibitions aside for ACSEXYBILITY, a sensual documentary exploring the sexuality of people with disabilities (PWDs). In an effort to deconstruct harmful misconceptions, individuals bare all with candid interviews about their varying sexual experiences and challenges navigating relationships in a society stricken with ableism. Each story reveals personal accounts of prejudice, assumptions, and the fact that much of the world continues to view disabilities as disadvantages, equating PWDs with being incapable. Yet by challenging the long history of discrimination, this film—in its unique methods of eroticism, intimacy, and empowerment—explicitly displays that to desire and be desired are common denominators among all humans, and every body is worthy of these primal emotions. —A.B.
