About This Film
Film Overview
ALPINE FIRE is a dramatically intense study of a farming family living an isolated existence among the high peaks of the Swiss Alps. The family has lived all their lives among the breathtaking beauty of the mountains, trekking only twice a year to the city for supplies. The film begins with the sexual awakening of the 15-year-old-son, who is more cut off than the rest of his family in that he is deaf and has never had any education. His increasing frustration at his inability to articulate cuases him to rebel against his parents, turning to his sister with all his affection. When he runs away to a mountaintop hut, he is visited only by his sister, whose love leads to an act which is as unacceptable to the morals of their family as it is shown to be inevitable under the circumstances. Deserved winner of the Grand Prize at the Locarno Film Festival.
