About This Film
Film Overview
NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE Magdalena’s headaches are growing worse. At nine years old, she stands several inches shorter than her classmates, and her vision is failing more every day. After years of dealing with countless doctors who refuse to take the illness seriously, her frustrated mother Hanni begins diligently studying stacks of medical books as she is worried she is the only person who believes her daughter’s pain is legitimate. While visiting another specialist who is quick to write off Magdalena’s symptoms as mental illness, Hanni refutes the diagnosis and demands the doctor conduct further tests. Magdalena’s health is on a downward slope, and when her mother finally finds a glimmer of hope for her ailing daughter, it may already be too late. Throughout this ongoing battle, the film intermittently cuts to Hanni in a culminating court case with flashbacks of painful wounds from her own childhood. A tearful, heart-wrenching story based on the true events of a daughter’s unexplainable illness and her mother’s unrelenting struggle to save her, AN UNHEARD WOMAN is a fight to the end. (In German with subtitles) —A.B.
