Film Overview

APRON STRINGS tells the parallel story of two families with different cultures and different problems. Anita, the beautiful host of an Indian cooking show on TV, and Tara, the owner of a traditional curry house, are sisters who have not spoken in 20 years. Anita was disowned from her family for going against their culture and getting pregnant before marriage. Tara, meanwhile, ends up unknowingly hiring Anita's son Michael, who is secretly trying to learn more about his Indian heritage and the family he never knew. Down the street from Tara's shop is Lorna, who runs a bakery in the primarily Indian neighborhood. She is constantly dealing with her son Barry and his serious gambling addiction. All three women must face betrayal and confront their families' secrets of the past. Can Tara ever forgive Anita and accept Michael for who he is? Will Lorna continue to financially support Barry's obsession for gambling on horses? Director Sima Urale combines food and reality to prove that there are some things you just can't run away from. – L.W.
