About This Film
Film Overview
This stirring, romantic epic is set against the backdrop of two opposite cultures in the mid-1950s. After World War II, Edouard (Jeremy Irons) had abandoned Belgium's old-world tradition, and had established himself in the Australian wool trade. Now, at the behest of his brother, he returns to Belgium to help save the family wool business, competing unsuccessfully in the ruthless international market. Edouard's way of life has become firmly Australian, and he is reluctant to spend much time back in BeIgium. But after meeting Jeanne (Fanny Ardant), he prolongs his visit, and the two soon fall in love. Edouard's love for Australia and his struggle to put a secret past behind him complicate their otherwise passionate romance. AUSTRALIA's fine cast is sensitively directed and complemented by ravishing cinematography.
