About This Film
Film Overview
Two of Argentina's best known actors, Norma Aleandro and Federico Luppi, are in top form in this story of the hesitant relationship between two people in their middle years, seemingly irreconcilibily divided by class and religious backgrounds. Clara Goldstein (Aleandro) places an advertisement in the newspaper, looking to meet a man of similar age, interests, and religious faith. Yet the person who answers, Ra?l (Luppi), is not her ideal: he is working class, unrefined (by her standards), and above all, he is not Jewish. But Clara has a problem. She has told her elder brother who lives in Boston that she has a steady relationship with a cultured Jewish man and the brother is about to pay her a visit. She proposes to Ra?l that she turn him into the man of her fiction for the duration of her brother's stay. But how good a director will she be, and will Ra?l learn and stick to the script? Reality turns out to be more complex, painful, but ultimately more rewarding than Clara's early images and fixed ideas. This assured, heartwarming film confirms Mignogna's reputation as one of Argentina's most interesting directors. In Spanish with English subtitles. – John King, London Film Festival
