About This Film
Film Overview
The year is 1938, and Carmela and Paulino are a couple of traveling cabaret performers, surviving the Spanish Civil War and entertaining the Republican troops between battles. Their sexy dances, vulgar jokes, and patriotic souls don't pay well, but give them a chance to play a small part in an important struggle. One foggy night on the road to Valencia, they find themselves behind enemy lines. Arrested by Franco's fascists, they quickly adapt their stage material to fit the prevailing stage politics and perform for the conquering army to save their skins. However, the performance ends unexpectedly when the two comedians clash, Paulino following his instinct for survival, and Carmela standing up for her beliefs. Carmen Maura (WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN) stars in this bittersweet comedy.
