About This Film
Film Overview
Dai Sato seems like your average inarticulate everyman, except that his hair is sort of weird, he has an unusual fondness for his foldable umbrella, and he lives alone in a messy house where he eats out of bowls with stray cats. But unbeknownst to his neighbors, Dai is often called on by the Japanese military to perform a Shinto ceremony which, when combined with electric shocks, will transform him into BIG MAN JAPAN. This means he's a huge superhero in a purple Speedo who must battle the “Baddies” threatening Tokyo. The computer-generated clashes between these titans are the greatest thing since the WWF met Godzilla and provides fodder for a reality TV show whose ratings have already hit rock bottom. BIG MAN JAPAN assumes the form of a mockumentary, with a cameraman-interviewer following Dai around, reminding him that the viewing public no longer cares about the kind of invaders he battles. Although he's descended from a long line of superheroes, in fact, Dai is something of a joke. The hero's parades and fawning servants that were afforded his grandfather are no longer his to enjoy. These days, Dai struggles like any modern mortal to make ends meet, juggling responsibilities to his ex-wife and daughter, his senile grandfather, and his agent. What's a superhero to do? (In Japanese with English subtitles) – BB
