Film Overview

The Three Gorges Dam project on the Yangtze River is almost completed, and residents from Guilin Village are being systematically “relocated” under inequitable terms. Once the project is finished, over 800 villagers will have moved. As family and friends around her are affected– literally dismantling their houses before they leave– villager Zhang Bingai begins a ten year struggle with the bureaucratic government to remain home, caring for her disabled husband, looking after her two children, and farming. Following Bingai for ten years, director Feng Yan shoots this moving story in the vid lensing style, where the camera caputres the reality and starkness of unscripted moments of everyday life. Recorded are not just the encounters with bureaucratic red tape– some unbelievably comic– that Bingai and her fellow villagers must endure, but also her most private, yet frank, disclosures regarding her family and past. What will remain of Bingai's home and everything she has ever known? Will her tenacity triumph? Ultimately, BING AI is a simple and poetic unembellished love story of the bond Bingai has with her home, her land, and with her husband. (In Chinese with English subtitles) – CCP
