About This Film
Film Overview
Back on the big screen where it belongs, this enduring classic of the changing West follows two legendary outlaws of the 1890s: the sly, emotional Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman), and the fast-drawing, deadpanned, funny Sundance Kid ( the role that made Robert Redford a superstar). With their comic bantering even in the face of danger, it's hard not to like these two guys, running for their lives from a relentless, if remote, sheriff's posse. Steve McQueen wanted the role of the Sundance Kid, and the studio wanted Warren Beatty, but Newman had enough clout to be able to choose Redford. Newman's doubts about his own ability to play comedy proved to be unfounded; the Butch/Sundance interplay is delivered with the ease of a veteran comedy team. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Song for Burt Bacharach and Hal David's “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head”.
