About This Film
Film Overview
Amanda Plummer gives a stunning performance in this drama of murder, obsession and shocking self discovery that dips into the blackest of balck comedy. Eunice (Plummer) is a volatile drifter, roaming the desolate highways of Northern England in search of a lost lover. Miriam (Saskia Reeves) is a naive small-town girl who looks after her elderly mother. The two meet and hit the road in a stolen car-its dead owner stashed in the trunk. While Eunice chases down redemption, Miriam's desperate wish to save her catapults them toward the final moment of tragic, cathartic resolution. Winterbottom's masterful direction creates a palpable tension, broken by moments of dark humor that may draw comparisons to films like “Shallow Grave,” but his vision and story are breathtakingly original.
