Film Overview

b>WORLD PREMIEREWe first meet Malcolm on a mountain, a perfect metaphor for his 27 years of life. Malcolm has a sweet open face and is very forthcoming. He wants to tell us the story of his life, of becoming a man. At one time Malcolm had a different name ? and a different sex. But Malcolm is also a person of faith, and his story of becoming a man is intertwined with his story of training to be a pastor in the United Church of Christ. Malcolm visits old and new friends to fill in his story. One is Calpernia Addams, a transgendered woman whose soldier boyfriend was murdered for dating her. We meet Malcolm?s brother, who is gay, and briefly hear his parents on the phone. But as far as Malcolm comes in his transition from woman to man, and from confused young person to a confident pastor, he still has trouble entering his old hometown, or seeing his parents. Unlike other films on this topic, CALL ME MALCOLM doesn?t dwell much on the physical changes or surgeries, but on the emotional and spiritual growth of someone emerging from the dark into the light.
