Relying on the viewer to supply his own answers, CAMERA BUFF poses a number of provocative questions: Is it better to live a peaceful life on the sidelines or to act as a participant and collaborator with fate? Should a person risk his happiness, and that of his family, for the unknown? How does one regain human values in situations fraught with danger? CAMERA BUFF's protagonist Filip Mosz is an enthusiastic shutterbug who initially confines himself to immortalizing his baby daughter and his factory's anniversary celebration on film. As Mosz comes to the realization that his perceptions are more acute through the eye of his camera, he trains his lens increasingly on those things which the authorities would prefer not to be shown. His new, more participatory life costs him dearly. By forfeiting personal happiness, however, Mosz gains artistic awareness and a fresh appreciation of the multiplicity of the human experience. Krzysztof Kieslowski is in the front ranks of Poland's cinematic revolution, along with other noteworthy directors such as Krzysztof Zanussi (featured in CAMERA BUFF) and Agnieszka Holland, whose “Provincial Actors” is another Festival feature.
