Argentina's nominee for an Academy Award, CAMILA is a highly romantic melodrama of doomed passion based on the true story of a 19th century tragic love affair during a repressive Argentine dictatorship. The end of censorship in 1983 made it possible for Maria-Luisa Bemberg to film the suppressed, taboo subject of the love between the rebellios Camila O'Gorman and Father Ladislao Gutierrez, the handsome Jesuit priest who was her confessor. Individually outspoken against the brutality of the political regime, the lovers ran away together to start a new life. Church and state officials relentlessly tracked them down and charged them with sacrilege, punishable by death. Eroticism heightens the lyrical, soft-focus lensing of the legendary romance.
