Camp 14–Total Control Zone

Until the age of 23, Shin Dong-Huyk had no idea that a world existed outside of the North Korean re-education camp he was born in. His parents were both prisoners who were married by guards. At the age of six, he was forced to do hard labor, constantly threatened by starvation, beatings, and death. This was all he knew until an older man began telling him stories about life on the outside. After his mother and brother were executed in front of him, Shin successfully escaped, later learning that he'd actually been in a death camp. He eventually made his way to South Korea where he lives today. Shin shares his story all over the world and works with human rights organizations. But, behind the scenes, he still struggles with his freedom. Shocking as it may be, he still longs for the only home he's ever known.
