Film Overview

In his first film in over 30 years, Víctor Erice (“The Spirit of the Beehive”) makes another masterpiece, an ode to cinema following a reclusive former filmmaker investigating the two-decades-old disappearance of one of his actors. Nominated for 11 Goya Awards, with José Coronado winning Best Supporting Actor. In 1990 celebrated filmmaker Miguel Garay attempted to shoot his very last film. But the film was never completed because, during shooting, his leading man and best friend Julio Arenas mysteriously went missing, devastating Miguel and fatally derailing the project. Miguel could never bring himself to shoot another film. Decades later in 2012, an investigative series is highlighting the unsolved case of Julio’s disappearance and interviewing Miguel, dredging up old memories and revealing new questions in the process. Although Julio has been presumed dead for years, no body was ever recovered, and many speculate he may still be out there. Slowly unraveling this haunting mystery, CLOSE YOUR EYES is an epic tale that showcases friendship, loss, and the lingering magic of cinema. —G.S.
