Film Overview

In CONNECTED, award-winning filmmaker Tiffany Shlain narrates both an historical and an autobiographical timeline. Her commentary on the cause and effect of humanity itself – from the speculation of how the use of our left brain versus our right brain has shaped our entire existence to the suggestion that the rapid advancement of technology can in fact increase our connection to one another (as long as we don't abuse it). A powerfully fascinating documentary, CONNECTED provides extraordinary explanations of our world, supported by intelligent and credible theories. But as Tiffany's ideas flow through her film just like the philosophical synapses she speaks of, the true heart of her story is found within her father, Dr. Leonard Shlain, an acclaimed author and brain surgeon. He is known for his focus on the connection between art and physics, and has stood as both an intellectual role model and a superhero for his daughter throughout her life. When a group of sudden, significant events take place during the making of her documentary, Tiffany decides to highlight her film with personal reflections, accentuating how human connection drives everything we do. Through inventive animation, amusing archival footage, and emotional home video, CONNECTED makes us see the importance of interdependence in a world that puts such an emphasis on independence. – M.M.
