Film Overview

As with his psychological suspense dramas of the late 1960s, Claude Chabrol follows in the footsteps of his mentor Alfred Hitchcock with this, his 40th film. Robert has just moved to Vichy after leaving his wife. He is soon drawn to Juliette, and prowls about her country home at night before finally introducing himself. She becomes equally intrigued with him, and breaks off her engagement. But when Robert is blamed for the disappearance of her fiance, their troubles begin. Through many layers of lies and deception the madness develops, and Chabrol keeps his audience off balance to the very end of this thrilling and entertaining film.
