Film Overview

In this delicate and reflective film, the superb British character actor Dirk Bogarde returns to the screen after a 12?year absence to portray a retired Englishman who, after a serious heart operation, has retired to the south of France with his long-suffering wife, Miche. Unavoidably nearing the end of his life, but unprepared to accept the fact that he is old, Daddy continues to spar and argue with Miche. But as he faces his own mortality, his relationship with his daughter, Caroline (Jane Birkin), deepens. Their conversations are a model of perception and understanding. Bertrand Tavernier (SUNDAY IN THE COUNTRY) is, as always, subtle and incisive in his observances of family life, and Bogarde's low-key performance is beautifully effective.
