Film Overview

Winner of the French Cesar and Oscar for Best Foreign Film, DANGEROUS MOVES is an edge-of-the-seat, suspenseful drama inspired by the Korchnoi-Karpov chess match. Michel Piccoli plays Liebskind, an ailing Soviet Jew who has been the world champion chess master for 12 years. His flamboyant opponent and former pupil, Fromm (Alexander Arbatt), has defected to the West and is determined to win their match in Geneva by any unethical means. The players and their wives are pawns themselves, exploited by the Soviet bureacracy. Their personal and political conflicts are intensified by psychological pressures devised daily by their scheming entourages. A brilliant cast and taut direction create a fascinating battle of wits.
