Film Overview

Rich, hip-hop loving playboy, Cristobal, has invited his equally rich and fabulous friends over for a barbecue at his parent's vacation home while they are away. His hippie sister and her pill-popping posse are also staying at the house. Cristobal has invited his girlfriend to attend, but when he meets Argentine hottie, Dolores (whom his friends have brought along), he gives his girlfriend the wrong directions to buy time to win Dolores' heart. The lifestyles of Cristobal and his friends are distinctly different than his house servants. One of them is Adan, the gardener who also grew up with Cristobal. Subtle undercurrents of unease and distrust arise when the two groups are intertwined during this weekend party. This may sound like an episode on an MTV reality show, but it is actually a subtle film that speaks volumes on Mexico's current, unspoken social class clash. DEFICIT is also the directorial debut for Gael García Bernal, acclaimed Mexican movie star and heart-throb. He stars as the spoiled and cocky, Cristobal. Bernal examines the differences between social hierarchies in Mexico, focusing on the slightest nuances of tension between the rich and the not-so-rich, all within one house.
