Long ago when the life of every man and of his tribe depended upon the power of nature, courage and force were the most respected human qualities. Kozhazhash, the hero of many legends and tales from the Kirguiz region of the USSR, possessed these qualities, enjoyed the respect of his people, and always had luck and success in his endeavors. But the year of great hardship forced previously good people to betray the laws of nature and the traditions of their ancestors.
