Film Overview

In this avant-garde narrative/documentary hybrid that challenges binary thinking in form, content, and theme, an aging Iranian-American trans man confronts his own latent sexual desires as he travels through time via North American trans history and activism. An Iranian American trans man pores through documents at a Chicago queer community center. There he unlocks a personal journey through shared queer past and present—perhaps even revealing a future of renewed connection between himself and his transmasculine community. DESIRE LINES boldly blends fictional and nonfictional elements, creating a collage of archival materials, candid interviews, and fictional characters—all speaking to the multiplicity of perspectives lived by trans men on different paths to discovering their full selves. With an eye towards both bathhouse culture and the legacy of transmasculine trailblazers, the film collapses time to examine queer eroticism and the evolution of personal identity with the openness of the modern day. —C.F.Content Warning: This film contains material that may be difficult for some viewers.
