Film Overview

CLOSING NIGHT FILMWhen a problem comes along, you must whip it. And when a movie about DEVO comes along, you must watch it. Jump back in time with director Chris Smith (“American Movie”) for the unfiltered truth about the radical and deeply political band from Akron, Ohio, whose origins tie back to the vibrant, civic campus of Kent State University.Charting their entire career from the early days beginning in Akron, Ohio to their rightful place in the American music history books, DEVO looks back at the story of the eponymous band. Featuring interviews with the band’s living members and a non-stop smorgasbord of their subversive and satirical visuals, this documentary celebrates not only their musical legacy, but also Devo’s spirit of innovation and philosophies about the devolution of the species and the American psyche. Taking a front row seat to their undeniable imprint on the art of music and video on the late 20th century, audiences get to share the story of how Devo was championed and ultimately discarded by MTV, how they challenged the status quo of American idealism, and how they generated unforgettable tracks such as “Whip It.”—C.F.
