About This Film
Film Overview
Meet Larry Pierce, factory worker, loving husband, and king of the dirty song. Having always had an interest in music, Larry started out playing “straight” country music on the weekends. But he soon realized his real talent: rhyming filthy words into pornographic country songs. Larry's first album was released in 1993, almost exclusively distributed in truck stops nationwide; the limited release, though, did not hinder his popularity. He continued to release albums over the years, jotting down lyrics at work and gaining a cult-like following. Still, he continued to play to live audiences in the same venue in which he records: his garage. When Larry was forced into early retirement while only in his 50s, he found that the nation had an underground network of filthy musicians who could help him bring his music to a larger audience. DIRTY COUNTRY interweaves Larry's story with introductions to some of the most vulgar and clever talent in contemporary raunchy music: rapper Blowfly, piantist Dr. Dirty, the infamous Doug Clark's Hot Nuts and the up and coming –itis. Friends and fans of dirty musicians talk about the music's appeal alongside cultural experts and social scientists who discuss the history and necessity of the bawdy song. Not a film for those who easily blush, DIRTY COUNTRY is a thoroughly fun and wholly interesting examination of an always existent musical underground and the characters who are just brave enough to create it. – J.B.H.
