Film Overview

Joseph Losey, director of such diverse films as “The Servant” (1963), “Boom!” (1968) and “The Go-Between” (1971), adds another facet to his career with this internationally acclaimed production of Mozart's masterpiece. Critics have hailed Losey's DON GIOVANNI as the superior of even Ingmar Bergman's version of “The Magic Flute” (1974) in successfully meeting the demands of two art forms, opera and film. Shot on location near Venice with one of the most magnificent casts of singers ever assembled, DON GIOVANNI is an orgy of breathtaking sights and sounds. The Orchestra of the Paris Opera under the baton of Lorin Maazel provides the music. Losey's stated objective in making the film was “to make opera accessible to a larger public.” “Movie lovers and opera lovers can rejoice together as never before.” – Judith Crist
