About This Film
Film Overview
Being a trucker is tough work—long hauls, cramped sleeping quarters, low wages. Now double that for the world’s female truck drivers, who must navigate a male-dominated world full of predatory and assaultive behavior in this eye-opening doc focused on Desiree Wood and her REAL Women in Trucking advocacy nonprofit. After losing everything, Desiree Wood takes a second lease on life as a long-haul truck driver. Alongside an irreverent group of women truckers, she fights for a life on the road. Using an intimate and observational approach, DRIVER captures the experience of Wood and her fellow drivers within a system that routinely promises and denies them the safety and autonomy they desire. The film follows Wood as she struggles to balance the demands of being a working driver with her ambitions as the head of a driver-led movement run from her truck, which is constantly at risk of being repossessed. In a rapidly changing labor landscape, Wood and her sisterhood of truckers rally against the crushing forces of an industry that is indifferent to their survival.Content Warning: This film contains material that may be difficult for some viewers.
