Eva Nová fell from grace in the public eye. Once a stunning young starlet, Eva’s alcoholism became tabloid fodder as she spiraled further and further out of control. Now 62 years old and on her third stint in rehab, she’s desperately attempting to reconnect with Dod'o, the estranged son she abandoned in her recklessness. Writer-director Marko Skop’s acclaimed past documentary work keenly emerges in his fiction feature debut, which intimately follows Eva with stark naturalism through every stumble toward redemption. As Eva, the renowned Emilia Vášáryová knowingly captures the precarious nature of an actress trying to play the role of stable and sober to her family while battling a disease that keeps her teetering on the edge of unraveling. Though Dod’o pushes her away relentlessly, Eva begins to see the toll his own drinking habits have taken on his wife and two children. An intergenerational tale of what happens when the common thread that binds a family together also tears it apart, EVA NOVÁ is a candid reminder that the road to second chances is rarely as simple as the one we often see on the silver screen.
