Have you ever had a single lie completely upend your existence? In Bosnia’s entry for the 2024 Academy Awards®, teenage Iman sees her social and family lives unravel when, during a game of Truth or Dare, she erroneously confirms a piece of gossip.As a group of eighth graders in Sarajevo pass the time, playing Truth or Dare and wondering where their class trip will be headed at the end of the school year, a rumor leaks that 15-year-old Iman slept with an older guy, Damir. Craving the attention and desperate to fit in, Iman impulsively chooses to run with the seemingly harmless lie. As questions and curiosities flood in from other girls in her class, Iman begins to further embellish the experience, against the advice of her best friend, Hana, who thinks Iman is taking things too far. As one lie leads to another, Iman becomes the center of serious controversy, potentially putting her class trip—and herself—in jeopardy. A hard lesson in adolescence, EXCURSION shares an honest portrayal of when teenage insecurities take on a life of their own. —A.B.
