A shy young teenage boy on summer vacation in Canada comes of age the hard way when he falls for the outgoing older Chloe in the gorgeous and haunting directorial debut from actress Charlotte Le Bon (“The Hundred-Foot Journey”), adapted from Bastien Vivès’ graphic novel Une Soeur. —M.G.

Thirteen-year-old Bastien is a wallflower yet to break out of his shell. While vacationing in Quebec with his family, he meets Chloe, a brooding but mischievous teen a few years his senior. The two continue to grow closer as they spend the summer on a picturesque lake. But amongst the awkward moments of adolescent desire, something eerie hangs in the air. Is it the spirit of the boy who drowned in the lake all those years ago? Or maybe it’s just Chloe’s morbid sense of humor. But Bastien isn’t concerned with ghosts or death as he experiences his first taste of freedom through minor transgressions. Actress Charlotte Le Bon (“The Walk”) crafts a beautiful and foreboding atmosphere in her directorial debut. Anchored by the earnest performances of the young leads, FALCON LAKE is a tender yet haunting coming-of-age romance that bottles the nervous excitement and uncertainty of young adulthood. —D.O.
