Film Overview

Focusing on the last decade in the life of German novelist Hans Fallada, this gripping true-life drama explores, with careful attention to authentic detail, the psychology of deeline brought about by personal crisis during a troubled era. Famous for such novels as ?Little Man, What Now?? Fallada considered himself apolitical and remained in Nazi Germany. But during the war he willingly compromised his artistic integrity in response to Nazi demands. To escape his troubled conscience, he turned to drugs and alcohol. In the years following the war Fallada's life continued in a downward spiral of failed second chances until, with the last of his strength, he wrote the first anti-fascist novel of the post-war period. Jorg Gudzuhn's convincing portrayal of the doomed author is superb.
