About This Film
Film Overview
Lance Williams is a broke, big-vision filmmaker in Columbus, Ohio, trying to will his first real movie into existence with nothing but a camcorder, a group chat, and delusional optimism. He’s convinced he can build a legitimate career without moving to L.A., if he can just stack enough gigs to pay rent, fund his proof-of-concept short, and prove to his parents (and himself) that this “film thing” is more than a hobby. Every “big break” Lance chases turns into a new fire to put out, a rapper roping him into a viral beef, a fraudulent high school football program buying him a camera right before imploding, sneaking on to Streamer JUCO, a fashion-show gig that turns into a backstage brawl, and many more. Lance documents it all like he’s making an inspiring artist journey… but the more he films, the more the footage reveals the truth: survival requires creativity, humility, and a whole lot of community.
Lance’s dream is held together, and regularly sabotaged, by the Freelancers: his found-family of hungry creatives chasing their own “break” in the same house. Desmond is a rapper with champagne taste and zero patience, turning every setback into a high-stakes scheme (and every win into a bigger flex). Markelle is an ex-athlete reinventing himself as a fitness influencer, forever chasing discipline and validation… until reality checks him mid-rebrand. Dominic is a clout-chasing streamer who treats life like content, dragging Lance into stunts, beefs, and chaos that “will definitely go crazy online” (often right before things go terribly wrong). Xavier is a fashion-obsessed philosopher stuck between insecurity and ambition, swinging from enlightened confidence to self-sabotage when the spotlight hits. Looming over it all is Lance’s family, especially his parents, who love him deeply, expect excellence, and constantly pull him back into real life with the kind of accountability that no algorithm can replace.
Together, they push Lance forward, pull him sideways, and prove the series’ core truth: in a world where the industry feels far away, the real advantage is the people willing to build with you.
Programmer's Comment:
"If you’ve ever lived with roommates, this story should hit home. I laughed out loud, connecting with the characters and their chaotic hijinks. I’m eager to see where it goes next—and it’s great to see Columbus, Ohio represented in this Sundance-premiering pilot." – Ryan
