About This Film
Film Overview
Not just any old romantic triangle, the three lovers in GLOOMY SUNDAY carry out a sweeping romance against the background of Nazi-Jewish tensions in the 1930s. The whole story, set in Budapest, is wound round the melancholy melody of ?Gloomy Sunday.? Laszlo is in love with Ilona, who plays piano in his restaurant. In time, they hire a professional pianist, Andras, a Christian, and soon the threesome is a somewhat happy m?nage ? trois. When Andras writes a song named ?Gloomy Sunday,? the restaurant?s popularity rises as the tune elicits great passion in Europe (and then the U.S.). Their lives are regularly interrupted by a German businessman, Hans, who one day shows up in an SS uniform. Hans also is infatuated with Ilona, and predictably, tensions rise between the four characters as WWII begins, and whatever kept the friends together may not be able to transcend what?s coming.
