Film Overview

Exploring the thin line separating faith and fanaticism, evangelicalism and extremism, this jolting documentary traces how American groups like The International House of Prayer have been sending missionaries into AIDS-ravaged Uganda, preaching a highly conservative and highly controversial religious doctrine. Uganda, this film proposes, has become ground zero to test ways in which church-backed legislation could be created to bring unquestioning compliance to Biblical law. The film tracks American influences that lead to the infamous “Kill The Gays” bill, which provides for the execution of gays and lesbians. Talking to religious leaders both passionately for and against these tactics, GOD LOVES UGANDA takes an unblinking look at religious fervor, unquestioning obedience, and the uses and abuses of God in politics. As it follows young missionaries and explores the frenzy to pass the anti-gay legislation, this documentary shies from no viewpoint. Whether you see it as God’s work or the spread of dangerous and hateful dogma, this film will shake you to your spiritual and human core. (In English and Luganda with subtitles) – C.R.
