GOODBYE PORK PIE

New Zealand's most commercially successful film deviates from the mainstream of that country's film renaissance, which reflects social and cultural concerns. Director Geoff Murphy has created a fast-paced comedy-adventure of crimes and car chases. This road movie follows two drifters, Kelly and John, who travel the length of their country in a stolen yellow Mini. Kelly, a young rebel, and John, a man fast approaching middle age, make for an odd couple, but they become part of an odder threesome when they team up with a blonde hitchhiker named Shirl. She introduces herself as a virgin, but the two men quickly determine otherwise. The three find they have one thing in common: They all want to reach their destination and avoid the police. The insanity and mayhem that ensue leave one patrol car in a lake and another over a cliff. The team manage narrow escape after narrow escape, more often despite their actions than because of them. Nonetheless, they become national heroes to everyone except the authorities. GOODBYE PORK PIE takes a simple formula and inventively invokes an air of continuous surprise and outrageous humor.
