About This Film
Film Overview
British author H.G. Wells coined the phrase “World Brain,” referring to a future repository of all the writings and knowledge of mankind accessible to every person on earth. Libraries and universities have always attempted this, but at the end of the 20th century Google started a project to make the “World Brain” a reality. Their goal: to digitally scan and preserve every book ever written. With such great and lofty vision comes great controversy. Within such power, argue many, lies the ability to abuse it. Whether you have a digital book or clutch tightly to your paper one, this fascinating documentary explores and debates the ambitious (some say over-reaching) Google project to put the entire world of letters in everybody’s laps. Using diverse commentary from experts around the world, the moral, political, and legal ramifications of Google’s Olympian plans are explored. By giving voice to both the advocate and the fearful, this important film will have you thinking, regardless which side of the tech divide you’re on. – C.R.
