The surprise hit of the London, San Francisco, and Toronto Film Festivals was this cinematic valentine, a bright and colorful nostalgia piece set in Belgrade in the 1950s. HEY BABU RIBA depicts a group of high-spirited, fun-loving, exuberant teenagers who are entranced by American popular culture and visions of freedom. The group becomes inseperable through their activities and their attitudes, which are at odds with the postwar regime. Unlike most eastern European film which are normally marked by a harsh and brutal realism, this film is refreshing and alive with the energies of an unsetting period and its unsettled youth.
