About This Film
Film Overview
"Hiking Through Grief" follows six widows and widowers as they navigate loss and slowly rebuild their lives. What begins as a small hiking group of three grows organically to more than 50 members of the Power of Joy, Hiking through Loss group in just two years, revealing a deep need for a new approach to grieving.
As they walk together through forests, fields, and changing seasons, the hikers discover how community and nature work together to heal the soul. The shared trail becomes a space where connection, movement, and the natural world offer comfort, strength, and renewed hope. Beautifully filmed, this documentary captures the transformative power of people coming together in the outdoors to find resilience, meaning, and a way forward after profound loss.
Additional Information: Our director, Stephen Burks, lost his wife to a four-year battle with ovarian cancer before the film premiered. He has now been embraced by the Power of Joy hiking group. It’s been an amazing journey for him to work on the film and learn about grief from others.
We have also developed an accompanying reflective guidebook that groups and film watchers can answer questions about the film and journal about their own grief journey. The authors of the reflective guidebook are the counselor featured in the film and one of the widows.
