About This Film
Film Overview
In this restored version of the 1994 classic, HOOP DREAMS captures the incredible journey of two young boys determined to one day play professional basketball. But setbacks have no trouble finding them in their impoverished neighborhoods and difficult home lives in Chicago’s inner city. William Gates hails from the Cabrini-Green projects, a housing development that has since been demolished due to rampant violence and dilapidated living conditions. Arthur Agee calls West Garfield Park home—an area known for its dangerous crime, and where the neighborhood basketball court is frequented by addicts and drug dealers. When a talent scout discovers William and Arthur, they’re enrolled in the prestigious St. Joseph’s High School to follow in the footsteps of Isiah Thomas, the school’s most revered alum. Although the stage is set to win the state championship, attend college, and ultimately be drafted by the NBA, unexpected obstacles force the boys to forge their own uncertain paths to pursue their lifelong dream. A test of tenacity and resilience, HOOP DREAMS will have audiences rooting for victory. —A.B.
