Film Overview

After many years in America, Juraj Hordubal returns home during the 1930s. He receives a very mixed reception in his native village, and both his wife Polana and daughter Hafia are afraid of him in the beginning. Clearly he was not expected to return, and Polana is particularly evasive. It's up to the farm hand Stepan to inform Hordubal of what's taken place in his absence. If the laughter of the townspeople can be taken as a suggestion, it seems that Stepan was not only looking after Hordubal's farm while he was gone, but after his wife as well. Received the best cinematography award at the Cork Film Festival. “Typical of Czech technical excellence.” – Variety
