About This Film
Film Overview
Brook may say I AM NOT A HIPSTER, however, he does fit the bill. After leaving rural Houston, Ohio to move to San Diego to enter the indie-music scene, he has become a self-centered, skinny jeans and dark-rimmed-glasses-wearing singer who yells at cars blocking his right-of-way in the bike lane. After an angry on-air interview on an indie-rock radio show, we find out the true reason why he moved to the West Coast and what he was running away from. When his three sisters and father come out to visit him with the initial motive of spreading their mom's ashes, we see a different side of Brook, the loving brother from a family that has recently been torn apart. His sisters do all that they can to bring Brook back from the brink of total self-loathing and reintroduce him to the Brook he once was. Though his sisters do have a strong effect on his outlook, the hard work must come from Brook himself. Director Destin Daniel Cretton creates a modern take on the strength of family ties and the emotional and physical lengths they travel to save us from ourselves. – B.G.
