Within the span of a single day, Maye Fischer must pack up all the belongings of her beloved aunt Amanda—a vivacious musician once full of life, wisdom, and unforgettable stories. After learning of Amanda's breast cancer diagnosis, the two women escaped the city to Topanga Canyon—to live out the rest of Amanda's life on her own terms, at peace among the trees. A year later, Maye stands alone in the house they shared together, full of grief, memories, and an inability to move forward. That is until Maye's cousin Fran shows up to claim what's left of her mother's legacy and to remind Maye that she was Amanda's daughter, not her. Based on director Ava DuVernay's own personal relationship with her late aunt, I WILL FOLLOW is a moving portrait of a woman at a crossroad, and the film effectively captures the feeling of loss and of being lost when the tragedy of a loved one's death creeps in and changes your life forever. – M.M.
