Film Overview

Kimberly Reed, CIFF alum and producer of “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson,” returns to the drag scene in this investigative piece on Venus Xtravaganza, one of the stars of 1990’s “Paris is Burning,” who was murdered during that legendary doc’s filming. As the queen’s drag and bio families grapple with the unsolved case, they breathe new life into Venus’ memory.Venus Xtravaganza emerged as a global trans icon after being featured as a glamorous “ball walker” in the groundbreaking 1991 documentary “Paris Is Burning.” Venus was murdered before that film’s release, and now, decades later, I’M YOUR VENUS picks up a trail gone cold as her two families—biological and ballroom—come together to honor her legacy, seek answers about her killing, and in the process find unexpected common ground.Content Warning: This film contains material that may be difficult for some viewers.
