James Stewart plays George Bailey, small town helper of the poor and needy, who reaches a point in his life when he thinks his benevolence and philanthropy have left him no life for himself. He becomes so unhappy that he wishes he had never been born. At this point, an angel named Clarence shows him what his family, friends and town would have been like if he hadn't been.
