About This Film
Film Overview
One of the most enjoyable serials that used to keep little Saturday-matinee addicts gnawing their jujubes in suspense from cliffhanging-chapter to chapter was Republic's 1941 JUNGLE GIRL, starring Frances Gifford as the brave Nyoka and Tom Neal as Stanton. Richard Myers was a 9-year-old fan when he first saw the serial. The independent filmmaker saw it again recently and met with Gifford, whose career ended after a serious car accident in 1948. Myers' JUNGLE GIRL recreates original scenes and combines them with personal reminiscences and haunting dream sequences of unusual beauty in his experimental style. JUNGLE GIRL takes us through a rare backstage view of Hollywood in a nostalgic, but tongue-in-cheek homage to a long-gone tradition.
