Film Overview

Kaleche is bewildered to one day suddenly find she’s arrived at a lodge called Kati Kati—a neighborhood-like purgatory for the dead that resembles a vacation retreat—with no recollection of her life. She also has no idea how she died, and she spends most of the movie trying to piece together why she (and everyone else she meets) is there. Along the way, she forms unique bonds with fellow afterlife denizens including: Mikey, an avid basketball fan who wears a mortarboard because he died before graduation; King, a stoic ex-priest who passes the time painting; and enigmatic community leader Thoma, who is shadowed by a self-hating, reanimated-corpse version of himself. When Kaleche finally learns the shocking truth about her Kati Kati stay, it upends the lodge’s equilibrium and forces her to reckon with the unresolved issues from her mortal life. KATI KATI is a gripping meditation on humanity’s capacity for forgiveness and the lingering ways guilt and self-loathing steer our actions. (In English and Swahili with subtitles) —A.Z.
